Beta
July 10, 2009mike Comments OffI am going to admit, this is not the first post in my life about the famed “Beta” tagging by programmers. It’s one thing to use the term beta when you are working on some software, but as you may or may not have heard Google (the subject of my greatest love/hate relationship) FINALLY and I mean FINALLY took Gmail out of beta. Why am I so upset about this, besides because it is a pet peeve of mine. Because I have been using Gmail since 2005, and I am sure I was by no means the first user of it. That’s FOUR YEARS, and what have they improved? I have no idea! It seems the same as when I first started using it. And on top of it all, I get the pleasure of having a little Google Labs icon on the top of my inbox, why? Because I have Google Calendar set up to show in my Gmail window. It seemed like something logical and should be default in the program. Its insane that this little box is so “experimental” that it isn’t even worthy of the beta tag, but insead a little beaker or whatnot to indicate that its still in the lab. Google, I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again… It’s the internet, everything is always being improved, its not a beta when its released to the wide open public, its just buggy code that will evolve as the internet does!
