Innovation

Let’s just put this out there, I am kind of a big dork, so the things I read about are a bit on the dorky side.  One of the things that caught my eye lately was an article in Popular Mechanics http://www.popularmechanics.com/breakthrough09/ .  The article was talking about a number of innovations and one theme that seems to be relatively constant is taking something existing, turn it on it’s head, and get something great.  The Ford Ecoboost engine was one of those things in which an existing technology was changed to suit the changing need, that need being energy efficiency versus raw power.  By looking at the two seemingly conflicting interests Ford was able to innovate in a manner that served both ends and came out with a fantastic, breakthrough product just through a little tweaking.  Another item on the list that was fascinating was the Sikorsky X2 which builds upon common thoughts about rotor aircraft technology and takes it to the next level.  I am not the man to describe the science behind this one, so check it out yourself.
