On (r)evolution

The buzz word of the year and soon to be the decade is “recession”, and it seems to be the only thing Americans can talk about.  Why don’t we mention another “re-” word, the one that started it all here in the good old U.S. of A.  revolution.  In economics there will always be periods of recession, its just part of the natural order of things, like summer follows spring recession will follow expansion.  I know it sucks, I was laid off in the middle of it too!  But it just happens.  There’s something about our culture that likes to think of things as linear, when in reality many things are cyclical.  It is the forward march behind that cycle that makes us advance, the evolution of our society and of our culture.  Even if our GDP is down our unemployment is up, it is the progress we make in technological, medical and other areas which leads us ever forward, while the cycle of expansion and recession goes on in the background.  The revolutionary breakthroughs our country has made from the industrial revolution to the technological revolution making us the leader in the world.  It all started from people, willing to sacrifice it all for a revolution and continued with people willing to sacrifice it all to move halfway around the world to this great country.  Its time we stop focusing on one “re-” word and start working on the next Revolution.
