Remember when Google used to sleep around
January 7, 2010mike Comments OffUp until this week, Google was a frat boy. They slept with every sorority chick on the block. Sure they had their regulars, Android, Chrome, & Gmail. But they were sticking their Google Search, Google Maps, Contacts and all that in just about anyone they could find. Example webOS for the Palm Pre. Sure it doesn’t run sacred Andoid, but it does search with Google, Google Maps, Google contacts and Gmail. The default two search options are both Google complete with logos and it comes pre-loaded with Google Maps, I feel like Android 1.0 didn’t even come with that! What phone doesn’t have Google Maps? And I know there have been a few Windows Mobile Phones with Google Search default instead of MSN / Bing. Hell they found their way into Barnes & Noble and their OS runs the nook. Who haven’t they been with? It had seemed like their new steady girls were HTC and Motorola only to shock (not) the world by releasing the Nexus One. What gives? Only a few short weeks ago Google was going steady with a few good girls and then as if they went to Vegas they show up wearing a wedding ring and holding a Nexus One! It hardly seems the Google way. Google is a software company, and they hadn’t really been exclusive (and still aren’t but who knows) until Nexus One. It seems like they backstabbed Motorola and even HTC who while they manufacture the Nexus One, have been trying to build a brand for themselves rather than a rebrand maker. And then there’s our friends the carriers. Sure you can get a T-Mobile subsidized Nexus One and “Coming Soon” to Verizon (hope that’s not the equivalent of a Google Beta because then it will never show up). But an unlocked phone right on Google.com ? Google… don’t you realize that carriers make their money signing people into two year agreements with huge early termination fees? (the FCC is looking at you Verizon). Bottom line… congrats Google on your first piece of hardware, best of luck to you, but once the honeymoon is over you will be one women for the rest of your life, and will wonder why a lot of your friends don’t hang out with you anymore.
