Here I come to save the day!

In case you haven’t caught on by now, I am a decent fan of Palm.  Have been for some time now.  Not to bore you with my background, but real quick my Palm’s: IIIxe, IIIc, Treo 650, 700p, Centro, Pre.  Do I like the underdog?  Well actually when I started getting on board with Palm they were the leader, the word Palm was the Kleenex of PDAs (remember the PDA kids?)  and let me tell you, they deserved it.  Palm Inc. (and palmsource, handspring and all its other iterations and names) invented the smartphone, and along with it indirectly most of the little widgets and wing nuts we have funny names for (smarttops, netbooks, eReaders – remember that app for Palm OS?)  Palm created a sector and a system in which mobile devices could have an Operating System that was available across a number of different devices.  Palm OS was the Windows of mobile devices, which is why Windows created Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) and eventually struck up a deal to have Palm make devices for it (in return Palm received the ability to HotSync, that precloud syncing system, with MS Office).  Should I credit Palm with all the things that spun out of all the things I just mentioned?  Am I justified?  Well they did essentially invent the PDA (back in the US Robotics and 3Comm days that is, ok kids you’ll have to wikipedia those things) and the PDA was the precursor to the smartphone, so yeah, maybe Palm does deserve some more credit than they get.

Now flash forward to 2009, Palm launches a new OS, the webOS and I’m pretty sure they only did it because people were complaining so much about Palm OS being outdated!  No but really the Pre and its future siblings are state of the art, and in my biased opinion rival all the other OSes and smartphones on the market today as top dog.  Let’s also not forget the sheer volume of developers Palm drummed up the last time around.  I say wait and see, and don’t sign any more two year contracts on the next iPhone 3GS2 before you see what Palm has in store.
